Nominations Open for Bunnings Home Ground Heroes Initiative

Nominations are now open for the Bunnings Home Ground Heroes initiative, aimed at recognizing the invaluable contributions of volunteers within New Zealand’s Touch communities. This program offers selected individuals a grant of $5,000 to reinvest in grassroots sports, celebrating those whose dedication fosters the development of players and local teams across the country.

As one of the most community-driven sports in New Zealand, Touch relies heavily on the hard work of volunteers, coaches, and supporters. Their commitment allows players to train, compete, and represent their communities effectively. The Home Ground Heroes initiative calls on Touch communities to acknowledge the unsung heroes who make the sport possible, from organizers to those working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Over the past five years, the program has recognized 20 individuals from various communities for their exceptional contributions to the sport. Their inspiring stories underscore the significant impact that dedicated volunteers can have on local sports environments.

One notable past recipient, Edie-May Johnson from East Tamaki, exemplifies the spirit of the initiative. Johnson has been a passionate advocate for local children and their families, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate in Touch. The grant she received has allowed her to invest in new equipment and continue providing support to families in need. She emphasizes, “Our programme remains completely free, with no playing fees, ensuring every child can take part regardless of financial circumstances.”

According to Joe Sprangers, Chief Executive of Touch NZ, the partnership with Bunnings has made a meaningful difference in honoring the individuals who form the backbone of local communities. “Through the Bunnings Home Ground Heroes programme, Touch NZ has the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the people who are the backbone of our communities,” Sprangers stated.

Melissa Haines, General Manager of Bunnings NZ, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of local volunteers. “Touch communities thrive because of everyday New Zealanders who give their time and energy to others,” Haines said. “Home Ground Heroes lets us support that impact in a meaningful way, helping local volunteers do even more for their players and whānau.”

Past recipients have utilized their grants to enhance local initiatives, eliminate barriers for families, and invest in equipment that promotes participation in Touch. The nomination process for the 2026 Bunnings Home Ground Heroes is now open, inviting communities nationwide to submit nominations for individuals who embody the same commitment and passion.

Nominators are required to detail how their chosen nominee positively contributes to the Touch community and how the $5,000 grant would further bolster their efforts. The nomination deadline is set for March 14, 2026, with winners expected to be announced in mid-April.
