Residents Voice Frustration Over Illegal Parking in Selwyn District
Residents in the Selwyn District are increasingly frustrated by illegal parking, with the local council recording 587 complaints through its issue-reporting tool, Snap Send Solve. This surge in reports follows a significant increase in parking enforcement, which saw the Selwyn District Council issue 2,902 parking tickets last year, generating a total of $393,265 in fines.
According to Sophie McInnes, a councillor from Rolleston, the issue is particularly prevalent with trade vehicles. “Quite often it is tradies’ vans,” she noted. McInnes shared her own approach to reporting problematic parking, stating, “If I see a dodgy park, I won’t report it straight off, but if I’m coming back the same way and they are still there, then I’m like, that wasn’t quickly unloading your van.” The increase in construction, particularly in new subdivisions, has exacerbated the problem, leaving local residents to navigate crowded streets filled with parked vans.
In one notable incident in July 2023, seven trade vehicles were ticketed for parking illegally on a footpath on Lincoln Rolleston Rd, adjacent to the Pak’nSave that was under construction. Complaints from parents highlighted the difficulty school children faced while trying to use the footpath safely.
The council’s enforcement efforts have revealed that the most common parking violations include driving without a current registration, which accounted for 514 tickets, followed by 462 citations for no warrant of fitness, and 393 for parking on a berm. McInnes indicated that the rise in complaints about illegal parking led the council to enhance its enforcement measures approximately two years ago.
Beyond parking issues, the Selwyn District has seen 581 reports of overgrown vegetation and 470 reports concerning damaged roads. McInnes has encouraged residents to utilize the Snap Send Solve app for quicker resolutions, stating, “You actually get a faster response if you use Snap Send Solve because it goes directly to staff.” The app is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
The data indicates that illegal parking is not the only concern for local residents; other prevalent issues reported include potholes (379), dumped rubbish (320), and general requests related to parks (310). The list of top concerns reflects a widespread demand for improved local amenities and infrastructure.
Detailed reports show that the majority of complaints were logged from key areas, with Rolleston receiving 2,211 reports, followed by Lincoln with 1,020, and Prebbleton with 626. Other locations contributing to the total include Darfield (286), Leeston (277), and West Melton (233).
As the Selwyn District continues to grow, the council faces the challenge of balancing the needs of new developments with the existing community. The ongoing issues related to illegal parking highlight the need for effective communication and enforcement strategies to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all residents.
