A series of severe weather warnings have been issued for various regions across New Zealand, with a strong wind watch now in effect for the upper South Island. The alert, announced by MetService, begins at 22:00 on March 14, 2024, and encompasses areas including Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, and the districts of Buller, Grey, and Westland north of Harihari. This watch remains active until 14:00 on March 15, 2024.

According to MetService, southeast winds could reach severe gales in exposed locations, with a moderate possibility of the alert being upgraded to a warning. While much of the South Island is expected to remain relatively unscathed, the North Island is bracing for more significant weather challenges.

North Island Faces Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecasted for large portions of the North Island. A heavy rain warning will take effect for Gisborne/Tairāwhiti and the Coromandel region, beginning at 10:00 on March 15. This weather could adversely affect festival attendees heading to Rhythm and Vines, an annual event that typically draws over 20,000 visitors to the Waiohika Estate vineyard.

Additionally, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, and the Coromandel will be under a strong wind watch, which will extend to the central North Island starting at 10:00. From 16:00, a warning of severe gales has been issued for the Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Kapiti coast. The Tararua district and Wairarapa will also be placed under a heavy rain watch starting at 18:00.

For those seeking better weather, Northland and Whanganui are expected to experience the most favourable conditions in the North Island today.

As the weather systems develop, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
