A truck and trailer carrying an excavator rolled over on State Highway 8 near Lawrence on March 29, 2024, causing significant disruptions and a diesel leak. The incident occurred at approximately 6.40 pm, between Lawrence and Waitahuna, prompting an immediate response from local emergency services.

Emergency crews from Lawrence, Waitahuna, and Milton were the first to arrive at the scene. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed that additional support was dispatched from Dunedin, bringing extra absorbent materials to assist with cleanup efforts. The leaked substances include diesel and hydraulic oil, raising concerns about potential contamination of nearby waterways.

The truck and trailer are currently blocking a section of SH8. According to a police spokesperson, the excavator has come to rest down a bank, while the truck remains partially obstructing the road. As a result, SH8 is closed between Clarks Flat Road and Waitahuna West Road until further notice. Detours are in place for both southbound and northbound traffic to navigate around the closure.

For southbound vehicles, the recommended detour involves turning right onto Clarks Flat Road, then left onto Waitahuna West Road, before rejoining SH8. Northbound traffic should follow the reverse route. There have been no reported injuries linked to the incident, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Local authorities are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure the safe cleanup of the spill. The incident highlights the importance of swift emergency response in mitigating environmental risks associated with transport accidents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
