Young Golfer Kan Katano Shines at Asia-Pacific Championship

Kanichiro Katano, a 16-year-old golfer from Japan, made headlines by achieving his first hole-in-one during the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (APAC) held at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai. Competing against some of the best amateur golfers from across Asia and the Pacific, Katano’s remarkable shot on the par-three 11th hole aided him in securing a commendable finish in the tournament.

Katano, an international student at Elim Christian College in East Auckland, concluded the third round of the tournament in fifth place. Despite facing illness on the final day, he ultimately finished in 14th position among a competitive field of 120 golfers, a result he described as “good – not too bad.”

Training and Ambitions

Having moved to New Zealand 18 months ago, Katano resides with a homestay family and has easy access to East Auckland’s premium golf courses. He expressed that his time in New Zealand is dedicated to improving both his English language proficiency and his golfing skills. His home city, Chiba, located approximately 40 kilometers from Tokyo, is where his father, Shinsuke Katano, introduced him to golf at the age of six. Shinsuke attended the championship to support his son during this significant event.

Katano regularly practices at the Pakuranga Golf Club, where he appreciates the course’s well-maintained greens. He also enjoys playing at the nearby Howick Golf Club and Whitford Park, noting the scenic views they offer. “I’ve played a lot of high-level tournaments, and they’ve all been good experiences,” he shared.

Achievements and Future Goals

Currently ranked among the top 300 in the world amateur golf rankings (WAGR), Katano has made significant strides in his golfing career this year. He has triumphed in three WAGR events in New Zealand, secured a runner-up position in the Auckland Stroke Play, and finished tied for fourth at the national under-19 championships. He also placed tied for 19th in the boys’ 15-18 age division at the junior world championships in San Diego.

Looking ahead, Katano plans to continue his studies at Elim Christian College while competing in East Auckland’s golf scene for another two years. His ambition is to secure a golf scholarship at a university in the United States and further enhance his world amateur ranking. He cites his admiration for renowned golfers such as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Ludvig Åberg, particularly appreciating Åberg’s impressive swing technique.

In a notable achievement, Fifa Laopakdee from Thailand emerged as the first player from his country to win the APAC. Laopakdee’s victory has earned him an invitation to the US Masters tournament and an exemption to participate in The Open in 2026, highlighting the high stakes and prestige associated with this championship.

With his remarkable performance at the APAC and ongoing dedication to the sport, Kan Katano is a young golfer to watch as he continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of a promising career in golf.
