East Coast Residents Evacuated Due to Landslide Risks

Residents along the East Coast are facing evacuation orders due to imminent landslide risks deemed a “potential risk to life” by local authorities. The Civil Defence has mandated the evacuation of approximately 30 houses in the regions of Onepoto and parts of Te Araroa after discovering evidence of unstable land in close proximity to these homes.

The evacuation orders were issued following assessments made yesterday, and there is currently no timeline for when residents might be permitted to return to their properties. In a statement from Ben Green, the Group Controller of Tairāwhiti Civil Defence Emergency Management, the situation was described as serious. “Significant landslide risk had been identified, but no geotechnical assessments have yet been completed,” Green noted.

Authorities are prioritizing safety and are clear about the need for thorough evaluations before any return can be considered. “We need to be confident there is no risk to life, and until this has been completed, residents will not be returning,” Green added. This statement was released by the Gisborne District Council on the evening of March 15, 2024.
