Escaped Bull Rams Napier Home, Inspiring Children’s Book
A bull escaped from a neighboring property and charged into a home in Puketapu, just outside Napier, on a morning in January 2023. The incident, which left a glass door shattered and a mother and her children shaken, has now become the inspiration for a new children’s book titled What’s That In Our Backyard?, authored by the mother, Charlene Whyte.
On that fateful morning, Whyte was still in bed with her two children, enjoying the final days of the school holidays. Around 9 a.m., the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by the unexpected arrival of the bull. “I let out a scream when I saw it,” she recalled. “It was a freaky experience, and I was just glad the kids were safe.”
The bull had jumped over a fence from a nearby property before wandering through an open gate directly to Whyte’s home. The sudden intrusion caused significant chaos, as the family scrambled to ensure their safety. Fortunately, no one was harmed during the incident, but the experience left a lasting impression on Whyte.
In the aftermath, she channeled her emotions and the unusual event into a creative outlet. Whyte decided to write a children’s book, aiming to capture the attention of young readers while also sharing a story that reflects the unexpected encounters with nature that can occur in rural areas.
The book, What’s That In Our Backyard?, explores themes of curiosity and adventure, encouraging children to embrace the wonders of their surroundings. Through vibrant illustrations and engaging storytelling, Whyte hopes to instill a sense of wonder about the natural world.
Whyte’s story resonates with families in the farming community of Puketapu, where interactions with wildlife are not uncommon. The book serves as both an entertaining read and a conversation starter about the importance of safety when it comes to animals in rural settings.
This unexpected event transformed into a source of creativity illustrates how challenging experiences can lead to positive outcomes. The release of What’s That In Our Backyard? is not only a testament to Whyte’s resilience but also an opportunity for children to learn and explore their environments in a fun and imaginative way.
As the book hits the shelves, it sparks excitement among local families and emphasizes the importance of storytelling in connecting communities. Whyte’s experience serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most unusual situations can inspire the most delightful creations.
