Hawke’s Bay Opens 50 Voting Venues for Local Elections This Saturday
Voting venues across Hawke’s Bay and the Tararua district will remain open until noon on Saturday, October 7, 2023, allowing residents to submit their local election voting papers. More than 50 locations, equipped with orange bins for ballot collection, have been confirmed by local councils, including the Napier City Council and the Wairoa, Hastings, and Central Hawke’s Bay District Councils. The accessibility of these venues comes as the number of returned voting papers approaches some of the highest levels seen in recent years.
While most of these venues will accept standard voting papers, only a small number, primarily council offices, will handle special votes. This is essential for individuals not listed on the printed electoral roll, including first-time voters and those who have recently turned 18.
The importance of participating in the electoral process has been underscored by retiring Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst. She emphasized that voting is a fundamental democratic right and an opportunity for citizens to influence the development of their communities. In the previous election in 2022, the voter turnout in the district was notably low at 32.95%, largely due to several positions, including the mayoralty, being uncontested.
Encouraging Participation in Local Democracy
Local councils have taken proactive steps to encourage higher voter engagement this election cycle. The increase in voting venues and the extended hours reflect a commitment to making the process as accessible as possible for all residents. The councils hope that these efforts will lead to a significant rise in turnout compared to the previous election.
Sandra Hazlehurst, who has served as the mayor, highlighted the role of local elections in shaping community priorities and governance. “Every vote matters,” she stated, urging residents to take advantage of the opportunities to express their preferences and to ensure their voices are heard.
With the deadline approaching, residents are reminded to check their voting papers for any discrepancies and to make use of the available resources at the voting venues. The councils have also provided information on their websites regarding the voting process, including details on how to cast a special vote if necessary.
The local elections in Hawke’s Bay and the Tararua district are crucial not only for determining the leadership but also for addressing key issues that affect the community. As the deadline draws near, the emphasis on civic duty and participation becomes paramount, reinforcing the significance of local governance in the democratic process.
