Lifeguards Prepare for Busy Summer After Surge in Rescues

Eastern Region surf lifeguards are gearing up for an exceptionally busy summer as rescue incidents have already surpassed figures from the same timeframe last year. Since October 25, 2023, lifeguards in this New Zealand region have conducted 69 rescues. This sharp increase is concerning, especially as many beachgoers are reportedly choosing to swim outside designated safe zones.

Chaz Gibbons-Campbell, the lifesaving manager for Surf Life Saving NZ Eastern Region, expressed alarm over the rising number of incidents. The statistics reveal a significant jump; last year, during the same period, lifeguards managed just 17 rescues, 59 assists, and 13 major first-aid callouts. The current figures indicate a troubling trend as the peak holiday season approaches.

Surge in Rescue Operations

On November 22, 2023, lifeguards at Mount Maunganui alone executed 11 rescues, primarily along the main beach, which has become a focal point of concern. Other locations, such as Tay St, have also seen increased activity, highlighting the need for heightened awareness among beach visitors.

Gibbons-Campbell noted that many beachgoers are neglecting the crucial safety measures provided by lifeguards. The flags indicate safe swimming zones, and not adhering to these guidelines puts individuals at unnecessary risk. As the summer season unfolds, lifeguards anticipate that the combination of warm weather and high beach attendance will lead to even more challenging conditions.

Community Awareness and Safety Measures

To address this growing issue, Surf Life Saving NZ is ramping up community engagement efforts. Lifeguards will increase their visibility and provide safety briefings to educate beachgoers about the importance of swimming within the flags. Gibbons-Campbell emphasized that while lifeguards are trained to respond to emergencies, prevention is the best strategy for keeping everyone safe.

As the region braces for the summer rush, the focus will remain on ensuring the safety of all beach visitors. The lifeguard teams are prepared and ready to respond, but they urge the public to take responsibility for their own safety by following guidelines and swimming in designated areas. As warmer days draw more people to the coast, the call for vigilance grows louder.
