A search and rescue operation concluded successfully when missing tramper Graham Garnett, aged 66, was discovered alive in a hut at Kahurangi National Park. Garnett had been hiking in the Baton/Ellis River area, with plans to return by December 30, 2023. When he did not return as expected, local authorities initiated an extensive search.

The operation mobilized various resources, including Land Search and Rescue New Zealand (LandSAR), specialist teams, and the New Zealand Defence Force. The Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand oversaw the efforts, which also involved numerous volunteers who contributed their time and expertise. Despite their efforts, the search was called off on January 15, 2024, after days of extensive searching yielded no results.

Authorities had begun to lose hope when Garnett was found later in a hut, safe and unharmed. His survival is a testament to the resilience of individuals in challenging environments and highlights the importance of preparation and safety measures while hiking in remote areas.

The successful location of Garnett brings relief to his family and friends, who had been anxiously awaiting news of his condition. The incident also underscores the commitment of local search and rescue teams and community members who rallied together in the face of uncertainty.

As the search and rescue community celebrates this positive outcome, they remind outdoor enthusiasts to remain vigilant and adequately prepared for their adventures, especially in challenging terrains like Kahurangi National Park.
