New Zealand Shearers Shine at Golden Shears 2026 Opening Rounds
New Zealand’s aspirations to reclaim its status in world shearing and woolhandling experienced a significant boost at the 64th Golden Shears held in Masterton. In the opening rounds, local competitors excelled, taking the lead in both blade shearing and woolhandling events.
In the blade shearing category, Allan Oldfield from South Canterbury emerged at the top of a competitive field of 32 shearers. Oldfield is on a quest to reclaim the title he previously won in France in 2019. His performance in the early rounds has positioned him as a strong contender for the championship.
Meanwhile, the woolhandling event showcased the talents of newcomer Marika Braddick from Eketahuna, who secured the top position. Close behind her was Joel Henare, a seasoned competitor based in Motueka. Henare, a former champion who previously won titles in 2012 and 2017, is determined to add another victory to his impressive record. Both competitors stood out in a field of 36 participants.
Machine Shearing Competition
The machine shearing event presented a different dynamic, with Gavin Mutch, a farmer from Southern Hawke’s Bay and a champion from 2012, leading the pack of 51 hopefuls. Mutch finished with more than a point advantage over Adam Dickson, who surprised many by securing second place representing the Falkland Islands.
The Golden Shears event, known for its rich history and competitive spirit, continues to attract top talent from around the world. As the competition unfolds, all eyes will be on these leading contestants as they strive for excellence in their respective categories. The strong performances from New Zealand competitors in the early rounds signal a promising tournament ahead.
With the excitement building, the Golden Shears 2026 is set to showcase not only the skills of the participants but also the deep-rooted culture of shearing in New Zealand. As the event progresses, the anticipation grows for who will ultimately take home the coveted titles.
