Parents Face Rising Costs and Safety Risks of School Devices
As the new school year approaches, parents are grappling with the financial burden of purchasing devices for their children, amidst growing concerns about screen time safety. Many students are now required to provide their own devices for both primary and secondary education, creating a challenging situation for families.
The market for school devices is vast and often overwhelming. Prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, making it difficult for parents to navigate their options. Sarah Ostergaard, a mother from Devonport, reported spending approximately $3,000 on devices for her two children. She anticipates that this cost will rise as they advance to secondary school. “When I first purchased my eldest daughter her first Chromebook back in Year 6, I wasn’t really given any guidelines at all, so I was kind of thrown in the deep end,” Ostergaard shared.
Managing Costs and Choices
Parents are increasingly seeking advice on how to manage expenses related to technology. With the rapid evolution of devices and educational requirements, many find themselves unsure about what to buy. The lack of clear guidelines from schools adds to the confusion, leaving parents to rely on personal experience and online research.
As schools embrace digital learning, the expectation for students to have personal devices has become commonplace. This shift places a significant financial responsibility on families, particularly for those with multiple children. The financial strain can be particularly acute for lower-income households, where purchasing even a single device may be a substantial sacrifice.
In addition to cost, parents are also concerned about the potential risks associated with increased screen time. Experts warn that excessive use of devices can lead to negative health effects, including eye strain, poor posture, and decreased physical activity. Parents are encouraged to set boundaries regarding screen time to promote a healthier balance between digital engagement and offline activities.
Finding the Right Balance
To address these challenges, some parents are exploring alternative solutions. For instance, purchasing refurbished devices or opting for more affordable models can significantly reduce costs. Additionally, many schools offer rental programs or financial assistance for families in need.
Educational institutions are also recognizing the importance of supporting parents in this transition. Some schools are beginning to provide clearer guidelines on device specifications and recommended brands, helping families make informed decisions.
Ultimately, the responsibility lies not only with parents but also with schools and policymakers. As digital learning becomes increasingly integral to education, a collaborative approach is essential to ensure that all students have access to the necessary tools without placing undue financial strain on families.
As this school year unfolds, the conversation around device costs and screen time safety is likely to grow, prompting further examination of how to best support students and their families in this digital age.
