Royal New Zealand Navy Sailor Returns Home for Christmas After 307 Days

A sailor from Hamilton has returned home just in time for Christmas after a lengthy deployment with the Royal New Zealand Navy. Leading Logistics Supply Specialist Amra-Maree Simek, aged 25, arrived back at Auckland’s Devonport Naval Base last week aboard the maritime replenishment vessel HMNZS Aotearoa. This homecoming concludes a demanding operational year for the vessel and its crew of 80, who have been deployed since late March 2023.

During the course of this deployment, HMNZS Aotearoa spent a remarkable 307 days away from home and covered over 31,000 nautical miles. The ship participated in various exercises and operations across a vast area, extending from Antarctica to the Korean Peninsula, as well as throughout the broader Indo-Pacific region.

Significant Contributions During Deployment

As a fleet tanker, HMNZS Aotearoa played a critical role in supporting New Zealand’s strategic operations. The ship was responsible for resupplying Scott Base and McMurdo Station, key research facilities in Antarctica, ensuring that essential supplies reached personnel stationed there.
