Seagull Nest Causes Flood at Napier Pharmacy, Disrupting Business

A seagull’s nest has led to significant flooding at Life Pharmacy in Napier, disrupting operations for the city’s only remaining inner-city pharmacy. On the morning of March 5, 2025, staff discovered that heavy rainfall had caused the floor to flood. The downpipe, obstructed by the nest and its contents, was unable to handle the 58mm of rain that fell overnight in the central business district.

Located at the Emerson Street entrance to Ocean Boulevard, Life Pharmacy has faced a series of challenges in recent years. Earlier in 2025, the pharmacy experienced three smash-and-grab burglaries within a span of ten weeks. According to the owner and pharmacist, Peter Bailey, the recent flooding adds to a list of difficulties that have plagued the business.

“Floods have become a recurring issue for us,” Bailey stated. “We still remember the devastation when 250mm of rain fell during the Napier floods in November 2020, and we faced further disruptions from Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. Each event has taken a toll on our operations.”

The flooding incident has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the pharmacy, which has served the local community for years. As weather patterns continue to change, businesses in the region are increasingly vulnerable to severe weather events.

Bailey’s team is currently assessing the damage and determining the necessary repairs to return to regular operations. “We hope to have everything back in order soon,” he added, emphasizing the pharmacy’s commitment to serving the community despite ongoing challenges.

The resilience of local businesses will be tested as they navigate the impacts of both natural disasters and unforeseen events such as this one. As the community rallies to support Life Pharmacy, its future remains uncertain, but the dedication of its staff and owner shines through in these difficult times.
