Steinlager Beer Recall: 2,538 Cases Mislabeled as Alcohol-Free
A significant recall has been initiated for Steinlager beer following a labeling error that misidentified alcoholic beverages as alcohol-free. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) confirmed its collaboration with Lion NZ to withdraw a total of 2,538 cases of the beer from circulation after receiving a consumer complaint.
The issue arose during a production run where bottles of Steinlager Ultra Low Carb beer, which contains an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4.2%, were incorrectly labeled. The clear bottles were marked as Steinlager Alcohol Free, causing potential confusion among consumers. The affected products were sold in 24-packs and featured a front label indicating they were alcohol-free, despite containing alcohol.
Details of the Recall
The MPI is overseeing the recall process to ensure that any remaining products are removed from store shelves. The best before date for these bottles is marked as October 21, 2026, which could mean that the affected stock may still be present in various retail locations. Consumers who have purchased these packs are advised to check the labels carefully and return any mislabelled products to the point of purchase.
Lion NZ has expressed its commitment to consumer safety and transparency. The company is working diligently to address the situation and minimize any potential health risks associated with the mislabeling. Officials have emphasized that the recall is a precautionary measure, ensuring that customers receive accurate information regarding the products they consume.
This incident highlights the importance of proper labeling in the beverage industry, particularly for products that cater to consumers looking for low or no-alcohol options. Mislabeled products can lead to unintended consumption of alcohol, which poses risks for individuals who may avoid alcohol for health, personal, or lifestyle reasons.
Consumer Guidance and Safety Measures
Consumers are urged to stay informed about the recall and check for updates from both the MPI and Lion NZ. The organizations recommend that anyone unsure about the labeling of their Steinlager products contact Lion NZ directly or consult the MPI for guidance on how to proceed.
Lion NZ has taken this matter seriously and is implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the recall unfolds, both organizations will continue to provide information to ensure public safety and maintain consumer trust in their products.
