A teenager who caused a serious five-car accident while under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driving license has failed in his appeal against a conviction. The incident involved Kekeli Nanedo, who was just 18 years old at the time of the crash on April 5, 2023. The High Court in Auckland confirmed the severity of the situation, where multiple victims sustained significant injuries.

According to the appeal ruling by Justice Geoffrey Venning, Nanedo had purchased a new Mercedes-Benz but was not legally permitted to drive. On January 7, 2023, police had stopped him while he was behind the wheel, instructing him not to drive until he obtained the necessary license. Despite this warning, he was found driving his car with four passengers just a few months later.

The crash occurred when Nanedo attempted to overtake another vehicle on a busy road, colliding head-on with an oncoming car driven by an innocent third party. The aftermath of the collision left victims with serious injuries, including a cracked spleen, rib fractures, a collapsed lung, and a concussion.

In his appeal, Nanedo sought a discharge without conviction, arguing for leniency due to his age and circumstances. However, the court upheld the original conviction, emphasizing the reckless nature of his actions and the significant impact on the victims involved.

Justice Venning’s decision reiterates the court’s commitment to road safety and the consequences of drink driving. This case serves as a reminder of the dangers of operating a vehicle while impaired and the legal responsibilities drivers carry.
