A teenager who caused a serious five-car crash while driving under the influence of alcohol has failed in his appeal against a conviction. Kekeli Nanedo, then 18 years old, was involved in the incident on April 5, 2023, after previously being stopped by police for driving without a valid licence on January 7, 2023. The crash resulted in significant injuries to multiple victims, including a cracked spleen, rib fractures, a collapsed lung, and a concussion.

On the day of the crash, Justice Geoffrey Venning reported that Nanedo was attempting to overtake another vehicle on a two-lane road when he collided with an oncoming car driven by an innocent party. Nanedo had purchased a Mercedes-Benz prior to the incident, despite lacking the necessary licence to operate it legally.

Police had previously instructed him not to drive until he obtained a proper licence, which he disregarded. The court’s decision emphasized the serious nature of the offences committed by Nanedo, highlighting the dangers posed by driving under the influence and without a licence.

During the appeal, Nanedo sought a discharge without conviction, arguing for leniency due to his age and the circumstances. However, the court upheld the original conviction, underlining the severity of the incident and the lasting impact on the victims.

The outcome of this case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to road safety laws. As legal proceedings concluded, the victims continue to recover from their injuries, illustrating the real-world impact of such dangerous behaviour on individuals and families.
