Three individuals are in custody following a burglary incident that escalated into a high-speed chase across South and North Auckland on October 10, 2023. The New Zealand Police were alerted around 17:00 local time to a break-in at a commercial property located on Great South Rd in Drury. Upon arrival, officers discovered that three suspects had fled the scene in a vehicle waiting nearby.

After spotting the vehicle leaving the area, police attempted to signal it to stop. The driver, however, accelerated rapidly, prompting officers to cease pursuit due to the dangerous driving conditions. Instead, police tracked the vehicle using the Eagle helicopter as it headed north along State Highway 1.

As the chase unfolded, the fleeing vehicle collided with another car on Great South Rd before striking a bus on Scott Rd in Papakura. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from these incidents. Eyewitness accounts indicated that at times, the vehicle was travelling at speeds exceeding 1.5 times the legal limit on the Auckland Northern Motorway.

Police are continuing their investigation into the burglary and the subsequent events. They have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The rapid response and coordination between ground units and aerial support were crucial in managing the situation effectively.

Authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety of the community and addressing such criminal activities decisively. The incident highlights the risks associated with high-speed pursuits and the strategies employed by law enforcement to mitigate dangers while apprehending suspects.
