Fisher-Black Secures Silver at UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda
Nelson cyclist Niamh Fisher-Black claimed a remarkable silver medal in the women’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships held in Rwanda on September 24, 2023. The event, which took place on a challenging 164-kilometre course in the hilly terrain of Kigali, showcased the talents of elite cyclists from around the world.
In a surprising turn of events, Canada’s Magdeleine Vallieres secured the gold medal after launching a decisive attack during the final climb. At 24 years old, Vallieres was part of a breakaway group that included Fisher-Black and Spanish veteran Mavi Garcia. As they approached the finish line, Vallieres made her move on the cobbled ascent, leaving her competitors behind.
Vallieres maintained her lead with impressive strength, ultimately crossing the finish line 23 seconds ahead of Fisher-Black. This victory marks a significant achievement for Canadian cycling, as Vallieres becomes the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal in the road race at the World Championships.
Fisher-Black’s performance was commendable, demonstrating her resilience and determination throughout the race. Following the event, she expressed her excitement about her podium finish, stating, “I gave it my all, and to stand on the podium at such a prestigious event is a dream come true.”
The challenging Kigali circuit tested the athletes’ endurance and strategy, with steep climbs and technical descents. Vallieres’ tactics proved effective, allowing her to exploit a pivotal moment and secure her position in the lead.
