Google Plans Hypertension Alerts for Future Pixel Watches

Google is reportedly developing hypertension alerts for its upcoming Pixel Watch models, aiming to enhance user health monitoring features. This initiative follows a similar announcement by Apple regarding its Apple Watch Series 11, which can notify users of high blood pressure levels.

According to a code leak from the latest update of the Fitbit for Android app, version 4.53, Google is preparing to launch a “Fitbit Hypertension Study.” This research aims to advance the understanding of hypertension screening using the Pixel Watch. Participants in the study will complete a questionnaire and allow Google to collect sensor data from their devices during normal use. However, users should be aware that this may lead to increased battery consumption.

In addition to the data collection, a subset of participants will be asked to wear a blood pressure monitor for a full 24 hours. In return, these individuals will receive compensation of $50 upon returning the monitor. This approach mirrors Apple’s methodology, which involved a significant survey of 100,000 users to develop its hypertension notification system.

Potential Impact on Health Monitoring

While the specific Pixel Watch models participating in the study have not been disclosed, it is noted that participation will not necessitate having the latest version of Google’s smartwatch. This strategy could broaden participation, ultimately enhancing the quality of data collected for the study.

Apple’s hypertension notification system relies on the heart rate sensor of the Apple Watch and employs a custom algorithm that evaluates how blood vessels respond to heartbeats over a 30-day period.
