Two fishermen from Gisborne are facing legal action after authorities discovered them in possession of 157 undersized pāua during a recent inspection. The incident occurred at Waihau Beach, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Gisborne, where Fisheries New Zealand officials conducted routine catch checks.

According to Jordan Cooper, the manager for Fisheries New Zealand in Gisborne, Whakatāne, and Central District, all the pāua recovered were below the legal size limit. The smallest specimen measured just 60mm, significantly smaller than the legal requirement of 125mm. Cooper emphasized the importance of adhering to size regulations to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

“Our fisheries officers patrol a large coastal area, and with summer approaching, we expect an increase in fishing activity,” Cooper noted. He urged the public to be aware of size limits and to comply with fishing regulations to help protect local fish stocks. The presence of fisheries officers along the coasts and beaches will be more prominent as summer progresses, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

The actions of the two fishermen serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by fisheries management in maintaining healthy fish populations. The prosecution highlights the legal repercussions of disregarding fishing laws, which are designed to preserve marine life for future generations.

As the fishing season heats up, authorities will continue to monitor compliance with regulations, ensuring that both recreational and commercial fishermen operate within the law.
