Fisheries Officers Nab Two Fishermen with 157 Undersized Pāua
Two fishermen from Gisborne are facing prosecution after being caught with a total of 157 undersized pāua. The incident occurred this week during routine catch inspections conducted by fisheries officers at Waihau Beach, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Gisborne.
According to Jordan Cooper, the manager of Fisheries New Zealand for Gisborne, Whakatāne, and Central District, all of the pāua confiscated were below the legal size limit. The smallest specimen measured only 60 millimeters, which is less than half of the legal minimum size of 125 millimeters.
Fisheries officers are tasked with monitoring a vast coastal area, and with summer approaching, an increase in fishing activity is anticipated. Cooper emphasized the importance of these patrols, stating, “Our fishery officers patrol a large coastal area and with summer on the way and more people expected to be fishing, you can expect to regularly see us along the coasts and beaches.”
The legal size for pāua is set to ensure the sustainability of the species, which is popular in local fisheries. The recent catch highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing regulations designed to protect marine life.
Fisheries New Zealand continues to urge the public to adhere to fishing regulations to help preserve aquatic ecosystems. Regular inspections by officers are a part of their strategy to ensure compliance and promote responsible fishing practices among the community.
As the fishing season progresses, authorities are likely to increase their presence along the coasts to deter illegal activities and educate fishermen about the importance of following size limits for aquatic species.
