Auckland’s Narendra Bhana Receives King’s Service Medal
Narendra Bhana, a prominent community leader in Auckland, has been awarded the King’s Service Medal (KSM) in recognition of his significant contributions to the Indian community in New Zealand. The medal was presented to him by Dame Cindy Kiro, the Governor-General of New Zealand, during a ceremony that celebrated community service and dedication.
Bhana expressed his gratitude for the honour, stating, “Receiving the King’s Service Medal is an honour beyond words. Standing at Government House in Auckland surrounded by so many New Zealanders who give their time and talent for the good of others reminded me that service is not about recognition; it’s about responsibility.” His remarks highlight the spirit of community service that has characterized his work over many years.
Years of Dedication and Leadership
For over 15 years, Bhana has actively served the Auckland Indian Association, including a term as President from 2018 to 2022. His leadership has been pivotal in fostering unity among diverse Indian communities throughout New Zealand. Notably, he played a critical role in establishing the Diaspora Group in collaboration with the Indian High Commission. This initiative has effectively unified various Indian communities to celebrate Indian Independence Day collectively, moving away from individual regional celebrations.
Bhana has been a vocal advocate on pressing issues impacting the Indian community, including immigration, justice reform, education, and healthcare. In response to a rise in retail crime affecting his community, he proactively initiated discussions with the justice sector to advocate for stronger laws, demonstrating his commitment to safety and security.
Advocacy and Cultural Promotion
In addition to his advocacy for legal reforms, Bhana champions the promotion of Indian languages and cultural heritage. He believes in ensuring that future generations of Indians in New Zealand maintain a strong connection to their roots. His commitment to youth engagement is evident in his support for the NZICA Youth Conference in 2023. This event focused on wellbeing, careers, and cultural education, actively involving youth in its planning and execution.
Bhana’s acceptance of the King’s Service Medal is not only a personal achievement but also a celebration of the collective efforts of volunteers and community leaders across Aotearoa. He remarked, “This award is a tribute to every volunteer, mentor, and community leader who continues to build bridges of understanding and unity. I accept it with gratitude on behalf of all who serve quietly but make an extraordinary difference every day.”
The King’s Service Medal is awarded by the New Zealand government to honour those who provide exceptional volunteer service to their communities, as well as those who serve in public office. It is associated with the King’s Service Order, which recognizes dedication to community and public service.
Bhana’s recognition with the King’s Service Medal underscores the important role of community leaders in fostering unity and understanding in diverse societies. His work serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the impact of dedicated service in building stronger communities.
