Dunedin Elections Yield Key Results, Calvert and Laws Re-elected
In the recent elections for the Dunedin City Council, incumbent members Hilary Calvert, Andrew Noone, and chairwoman Gretchen Robertson are poised to retain their seats. With 85% of the votes counted, early results indicate that newcomer Chanel Gardner and incumbent Alan Somerville of the Green Party will also join them in the council. Notably, incumbents Elliot Weir and Tim Mepham are expected to lose their positions, with the margin between Cr Somerville and Cr Weir being particularly close.
Strong Showings in Dunstan and Molyneux Wards
In the Dunstan constituency, Michael Laws has been comfortably re-elected. Alongside him, incumbents Gary Kelliher and Matt Hollyer, as well as former Central Otago district deputy mayor Neil Gillespie, are also on track to secure their council positions. All four candidates, including Ms Calvert, Cr Laws, and Cr Kelliher, are affiliated with the fiscally conservative Vision Otago team ticket.
Carmen Hope, another member of this ticket, did not achieve the same success in the Molyneux ward. In this area, Act candidate Robbie Byars is leading the early results, while Kate Wilson is also set to be re-elected. However, incumbent Lloyd McCall is anticipated to miss out.
Kevin Malcolm has successfully retained his seat in the Moeraki ward. The council has noted that these progress results do not account for some special votes and votes that were returned on the election day. As a result, the final outcome of these elections may shift once all voting papers are counted.
The community is now awaiting the final tally, which could potentially alter the current landscape of the Dunedin City Council.
