Kiwis Secure Thrilling 24-18 Victory Over Samoa in Pacific Cup
A late try from Dylan Brown propelled the Kiwis to a dramatic 24-18 victory against Samoa at One New Zealand Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland on October 29, 2023. The match, part of the Pacific Cup, showcased a thrilling battle as both teams exhibited strong performances, but it was Brown’s aerial acrobatics that ultimately decided the outcome.
The Kiwis initially took control of the match with two tries from Casey McLean, who scored in the ninth and 21st minutes. Brown, often referred to as the NRL’s “$13 million man,” played a crucial role throughout the game and sealed the win with a stunning try in the 74th minute. He soared to catch a kick from Kieran Foran, crashing against the post-pad before grounding the ball.
Despite the high hopes of the 135,000 Samoans residing in Auckland, who filled the stands with blue and red, Samoa could not secure their first victory against the Kiwis in six encounters. The team, led by captain Jarome Luai, remained competitive and inspired by their vocal supporters, who helped keep the momentum alive.
Match Highlights and Key Performances
Samoan players exhibited resilience, with tries from Deine Mariner, Simi Sasagi, and Murray Taulagi. Each of these moments kept the match intensely competitive, particularly after Sasagi’s effort leveled the score at 12-12 just before halftime. Luai praised the impact of the supporters, stating, “You kept us in the fight,” during a post-match interview.
Brown, named man-of-the-match, acknowledged the challenge posed by Samoa, asserting that they presented the expected level of competition. He expressed gratitude for his teammates, particularly the Kiwi forwards, with Joseph Tapine leading the defensive charge. Foran, who referred to Brown as “the Fossil,” shared his excitement about the match, emphasizing his confidence in Brown’s abilities.
McLean’s two tries marked an impressive addition to his tally, now totaling six tries in just two international matches. His debut performance against Papua New Guinea in 2024 had already established him as a rising star in the league. Foran, now the oldest player in Pacific Championship history at 35, delayed his retirement to contribute to the Kiwis’ efforts this season.
The Kiwis faced challenges, including penalties that put them on the back foot. However, they managed to regain control, thanks in part to a late first-half try by Matthew Timoko, which put them ahead going into halftime.
Samoa continued to fight back, with Taulagi eventually scoring to tie the game at 18-18 after a series of intense exchanges. A critical moment occurred when Mariner dropped a pass that could have led to another try, allowing the Kiwis to regroup and respond with determination.
Upcoming Matches and Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Samoa will face Tonga in Brisbane next weekend, while the Kiwis are set to clash with Tonga in Auckland on November 2, 2024. Both teams will aim to build on their performances as the Pacific Cup progresses.
The Kiwis’ victory highlights their resilience and skill, particularly in high-pressure situations. As they prepare for their next match, they will carry the momentum of this hard-fought win and the invaluable experience gained from this thrilling encounter.
