Queens Dominate Hoiho with Strong Performance in Porirua
The Tokomanawa Queens secured an impressive victory over the Southern Hoiho, winning 88-76 in Porirua on March 15, 2024. The match showcased the exceptional performances of key players, particularly Kristy Wallace and Penina Davidson, who helped their team maintain control throughout the game.
Davidson played a pivotal role, finishing the match with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. Wallace topped the scoring charts with 20 points and added nine assists, demonstrating her versatility and playmaking ability. For the Hoiho, Bec Pizzey was instrumental, contributing 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Paige Bradley added 17 points to keep the Hoiho competitive.
The game began with a clean start, but the Hoiho struggled with ball control. A deep three-pointer from Claire Jacobs helped shift momentum, followed by a two-pointer from Pizzey that narrowed the score to 22-19. However, the Queens responded quickly. Stella Beck intercepted a crosscourt pass, leading to a fast break that extended the lead to 28-20 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Hoiho’s Lil Dart hit a three-pointer, allowing them to stay within reach. Dart then facilitated a play for Pizzey under the basket. Despite their efforts, the Queens capitalized on mismatches and accelerated their fast breaks, establishing a significant lead of 42-30 by halftime.
The Hoiho opened the third quarter with a strong push, scoring the first six points to reduce the deficit. Bradley’s clutch three-pointer pulled them closer at 54-49. However, Davidson halted the Hoiho’s momentum with a crucial basket, and Wallace responded with another three-pointer to re-establish a comfortable margin. Despite winning the third quarter 20-10, the Hoiho entered the final period trailing 64-60.
As the fourth quarter unfolded, the Queens regained their composure, embarking on a scoring run that pushed their lead to 69-60. They maintained this advantage, ultimately sealing the victory at 88-76.
This match in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams, with the Queens demonstrating their strength and strategic play. The scores reflected the dynamic nature of the game, with the quarter breakdown being 28-20, 54-40, and 64-60 in favor of the Queens.
