Tokomanawa Queens Triumph Over Southern Hoiho with Strong Performance
The Tokomanawa Queens secured an impressive 88-76 victory against the Southern Hoiho in a high-energy matchup held in Porirua on March 15, 2024. The win was marked by standout performances from several players, particularly Kristy Wallace and Penina Davidson, who played crucial roles in leading their team to success.
Davidson made a significant impact on the court, finishing the game with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. Wallace also had a stellar performance, contributing 20 points and nine assists to support the Queens’ offensive strategy.
The Hoiho’s Bec Pizzey was formidable on both ends of the court, recording 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Her efforts kept the Hoiho competitive throughout the match.
The game started cleanly, but the Hoiho struggled with turnovers early on. After a slow start, Pizzey managed to score a deep two-pointer, narrowing the gap to 22-19. However, the Queens quickly responded, with Stella Beck seizing a crosscourt pass and executing a fast break to end the first quarter at 28-20.
As the second quarter unfolded, the Hoiho fought back, with Lil Dart sinking a three-pointer to bring her team closer. Dart also assisted Pizzey under the hoop, showcasing teamwork and strategy. Despite their efforts, the Queens maintained control and ended the first half leading 54-40.
The Hoiho opened the third quarter with a strong start, scoring the first six points and narrowing the deficit to 54-49 following a clutch three-pointer from point guard Paige Bradley, who finished the game with 17 points. The Queens countered with a strong response, with Davidson halting a nine-point run from the Hoiho, followed by a deep three from Wallace, restoring their lead.
The Hoiho continued to push back, winning the third quarter 20-10 and closing the gap to 64-60. However, the Queens regrouped and began the fourth quarter with a surge, jumping to a 69-60 lead. They maintained their momentum, ultimately sealing the victory.
This match was part of the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League, showcasing the competitive spirit and skill of both teams. As the Queens celebrate this victory, they look forward to building on their success in upcoming matches.
