Tokomanawa Queens Triumph Over Southern Hoiho in Thrilling Match
The Tokomanawa Queens secured a decisive victory against the Southern Hoiho with an 88-76 win in Porirua on March 15, 2024. The match showcased impressive performances from both teams, but it was the Queens’ ability to capitalize on key moments that ultimately sealed their success.
Strong contributions came from Kristy Wallace and Penina Davidson, who led the scoring for the Queens. Wallace finished the game with 20 points and nine assists, while Davidson added 18 points along with 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks. Their efforts were instrumental in maintaining the Queens’ lead throughout the match.
The Hoiho, despite the loss, had standout performances as well. Bec Pizzey was a force on both ends of the court, contributing 18 points and 12 rebounds. Paige Bradley added 17 points and played a crucial role in keeping her team competitive, especially in the third quarter.
The first quarter began with both teams exchanging baskets, but the Queens soon established an early lead. After a clean start, the Hoiho struggled with turnovers, allowing the Queens to capitalize. A deep three-pointer from Claire Jacobs and a two-pointer from Pizzey narrowed the gap, but the Queens responded quickly. A fast break led by Stella Beck pushed their lead to 28-20 by the end of the first quarter.
As the second quarter progressed, the Hoiho fought hard to stay in touch. A three-pointer from Lil Dart helped bring them closer, setting up Pizzey for an easy basket under the hoop. Despite these efforts, the Queens recognized mismatches and exploited them effectively, leading to a halftime score of 54-40 in their favor.
The Hoiho came out strong in the third quarter, scoring the first six points and narrowing the deficit to eight points. Bradley’s clutch three-pointer further closed the gap to 54-49. However, the Queens quickly regrouped, with Davidson halting the Hoiho’s momentum and Wallace hitting another deep three-pointer to regain control. Nonetheless, the Hoiho claimed the third quarter, winning it 20-10, and finished the period trailing 64-60.
Entering the final quarter, the Queens capitalized on their opportunities, pushing the score out to 69-60 and maintaining their lead. The Hoiho could not recover, and the Queens ultimately secured their victory with a final score of 88-76.
This match, part of the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League, highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams. The Queens’ ability to adapt and respond to the Hoiho’s challenges was key in their performance, showcasing their potential as strong contenders in the league this season.
