The FIFA U-17 World Cup officially commenced today in Qatar, marking a significant milestone in youth football with a record 48 teams participating. The tournament, taking place at the Aspire Zone, is expected to attract fans from around the globe, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere.

As Germany aims to defend their title, Argentina will seek to mirror the success of their senior squad, which triumphed in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 under the leadership of Lionel Messi. The tournament features 104 matches, with all but the final hosted at the Competition Complex in Aspire Zone, utilizing eight pitches to facilitate the action.

Unique Tournament Format and New Faces

This year’s edition is historic, being the first in FIFA’s history to feature all matches within a single venue. The final is scheduled for November 27, 2025, at the renowned Khalifa International Stadium. In a fresh twist, five teams—Fiji, Republic of Ireland, Zambia, El Salvador, and Uganda—are making their World Cup debuts, adding new narratives to the global stage.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed their readiness last week, assuring fans of a seamless experience with affordable ticket options, a lively Fan Zone, and efficient transportation. The group stage will showcase eight matches daily over nine consecutive days, culminating on November 11, 2025, as teams vie for advancement to the knockout rounds.

Teams have begun arriving in Qatar and have expressed their satisfaction with the facilities and organizational efforts. Roberto Grassi, FIFA’s Head of Youth Tournaments, praised the preparations, stating, “Everything is ready, the teams are happy. It’s a historic tournament — the first ever with 48 teams, all competing in the same complex.” He emphasized the excitement surrounding the event, noting, “We have the stars of tomorrow— the GOATs of the future—playing here.”

Defending Champions and Ambitious Contenders

Germany enters the tournament as the reigning champions, having secured their first U-17 World Cup title in 2023 after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over France. Coach Marc Meister reflected on the team’s previous success, saying, “What the team did two years ago was outstanding — a true role model performance.” Germany finds themselves in a challenging Group G, alongside Colombia, North Korea, and El Salvador.

“It’s a tough group and we’re looking forward to it,” Meister noted, praising the facilities. “The FIFA pitches are outstanding. We’ve had two great training sessions already, and the atmosphere in the team is excellent.”

Meanwhile, Argentina is eager to capture their first global FIFA title, having finished third on three occasions and reached the semi-finals six times. Coach Diego Placente expressed the drive within the team, stating, “Wearing this shirt inspires you. It makes you dream of going all the way. It’s never easy — it’s a World Cup — but we train with hope and determination to go the distance.” Argentina kicks off their campaign today against Belgium in a challenging Group D opener, which also includes Tunisia and Fiji.

The opening day features two simultaneous matches: South Africa vs. Bolivia in Group A and Costa Rica vs. United Arab Emirates in Group C. A simple opening ceremony will precede the Group A clash between hosts Qatar and Italy. Other notable matches include Portugal facing New Caledonia and Morocco taking on Japan in Group B, while Senegal competes against Croatia in Group C, and Tunisia faces Fiji in Group D.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup promises to be a thrilling showcase of young talent and emerging football stars, setting the stage for a new generation of athletes on the world stage.
