Students Celebrate Sporting Excellence at Christchurch Awards
The Zonta Club of Christchurch South recently hosted its annual secondary school sports awards at the Hornby Club, honoring the impressive sporting achievements of local students. This event celebrated the dedication, talent, and teamwork demonstrated by young athletes from various institutions, showcasing their contributions to sports both on and off the field.
Acknowledging Team Contributions
Among the standout performers, Hannah Jack from Rolleston College received the award for Most Valued Contribution to a Team in the girls’ category. Achieving a remarkable milestone, she played her 100th game for the senior A netball team, earning her recognition as a linchpin of her squad. Her exemplary sportsmanship and unyielding commitment were noted as key factors in her team’s success.
In the boys’ category, Blake Lewis from Christ’s College was honored for his role with the second XV rugby team. His leadership qualities, characterized by positivity and resilience, helped foster a strong team spirit, culminating in a successful season for his teammates.
Excellence in Sports Administration
The awards also recognized those contributing behind the scenes. Makayla Ruaiti of Marian College was named the girls’ winner for Contribution to Sports Administration. As New Zealand’s top-ranked female youth touch rugby referee, she has officiated at multiple national finals and is set to participate in the Asia Pacific Youth Cup.
For the boys, Alexander Black from St Andrew’s College was acknowledged for his officiating capabilities in both football and softball. His experience at national tournaments has established him as a respected figure in the sports community.
The awards showcased exceptional talent in adaptive sports as well. In the Most Outstanding Achievement with a Disability category, Charlotte Murphy from Cashmere High School was celebrated for her achievements as a para swimmer. She holds multiple national records and has earned gold at the NZ Open Championships. Her international success includes medalling at the World Para Series in Melbourne, highlighting her status as a rising star in para sport.
The Papanui High School cross country team was awarded for their collective achievement, securing first place in the para team category at the national secondary schools’ cross country championships.
Outstanding Individual Performers
Recognition continued with individual sports achievements. In the Most Outstanding Achievement in One Sport category, Eliza O’Meagher from Cashmere High School was honored for her role as a coxswain, leading the New Zealand under 19 men’s eight to a sixth-place finish at the World Rowing Championships. She also coxed the girls’ under 18 quad team to gold at the Maadi Regatta.
For the boys, Cooper Moore from St Bede’s College was recognized as a top young golfer. His accolades include multiple regional titles and participation in prestigious international tournaments, representing New Zealand at both the Asia Pacific Amateur Championships in Dubai and the Toyota World Cup in Japan.
The award for Most Outstanding Sports Team in the girls’ category went to the senior A volleyball team from St Margaret’s College, who were crowned national secondary schools champions. The boys’ award was claimed by Shirley Boys’ High School’s senior A basketball team, who achieved a historic clean sweep, winning both regional and national titles.
Recognizing All-Round Excellence
The Best All Rounder awards highlighted athletes excelling across multiple disciplines. Lulu Inglis from St Margaret’s College earned recognition for her consistent performances in both volleyball and netball, while Lewis Monk from Shirley Boys’ High School was acknowledged for his dual representation in surf life saving and canoe racing, achieving national titles in both sports.
Finally, the award for the Most Innovative School Sport or Physical Activity Programme went to Burnside High School for its “It’s My Move!” initiative. This student-led program empowers young women to engage in fitness activities, offering a diverse range of options from yoga to powerlifting, while fostering community and personal growth among participants.
The Zonta Club of Christchurch South’s awards serve as a testament to the dedication and spirit of young athletes within the community, encouraging continued participation and excellence in sports.
