The prestigious New Zealand Trotting Cup Day is set to captivate racegoers at Addington, Christchurch, on Tuesday, with the champion pacer, Leap To Fame, taking centre stage. The event features the $1 million New Zealand Cup, one of the richest harness races in the country, and draws thousands of fans, fashion enthusiasts, and punters each year, according to RNZ.

With a remarkable record of 58 wins from 73 starts and career earnings surpassing $5 million, Leap To Fame, trained and driven by Grant Dixon from Queensland, has become the clear favourite in pre-race discussions and betting. As of Monday, he held a strong position at $1.60 on the NZ TAB, further solidifying his status as the horse to beat. His only previous appearance in New Zealand resulted in a victory at The Race by Grins title in Cambridge, where he set a track record last April.

Strong Contenders and Local Pride

The excitement surrounding Leap To Fame is heightened by his family’s recent success in the Cup. His half-brother, Swayzee, claimed victory in both 2023 and 2024 but will miss this year’s event due to a setback in preparation. Despite this, Australian contenders remain formidable, including rising star Kingman, who recently defeated Leap To Fame in the Victoria Cup.

Local hopes rest on the Republican Party, trained by Cran and Chrissie Dalgety and driven by their son, Carter. A win for this Canterbury-based family would be significant, as Cran has previously finished second twice and third three times in the Cup during his 35-year career. A top-four finish would also push the Republican Party’s stakes past $1 million, according to RNZ.

Other notable New Zealand challengers include Merlin, who recently won the Kaikoura Cup, as well as Akuta, Don’t Stop Dreaming, and We Walk By Faith.

Additional Highlights and Festivities

In addition to the New Zealand Cup, the $400,000 Dominion Trot is another major highlight of the day, with Australian mare Jilliby Ballerini leading the betting. Other strong Australian contenders include Gus and Arcee Phoenix. Kiwi hopes will rest on Oscar Bonavena, Muscle Mountain, Bet N Win, and Mr Love, as reported by RNZ.

The day will feature two more Group 1 races for three-year-olds, with races 8 for colts and geldings and race 9 for fillies, each boasting a purse of $200,000. Additionally, the final heat of the World Driving Championship will take place, showcasing ten elite drivers from around the globe. Canadian James McDonald currently leads the standings, followed by Gary Hall Junior from Australia, with Kiwi Blair Orange sitting in fourth. The decisive 20th heat will run as race 3 at 12:54 p.m. local time.

Beyond the racing, the festivities will include the popular Fashion in the Field competition, with categories such as Best Dressed and Best Suited, with winners announced after race 6. Music fans can look forward to a performance by Shapeshifter at The Infield following the final race.

The excitement does not end with Cup Day; the Show Day meeting on Friday promises more high-stakes action, featuring two $500,000 slot races for three-year-olds and an additional four Group 1 contests. This year’s Cup Day at Addington is poised to be a thrilling blend of sport, style, and celebration, with Leap To Fame leading the charge as harness racing history unfolds.
