FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships Set to Begin in Doha
Doha, Qatar will host the highly anticipated FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships from December 25 to 31, 2023. The Local Organizing Committee announced that final preparations are in place for the tournament, which will take place at Qatar University’s Sports and Events Complex. This event is expected to attract a global audience of chess enthusiasts.
Star Players and Competitive Edge
During a press conference, Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, confirmed that all arrangements for the championships have been finalized. The Open World Blitz Championship will feature 233 players, while the World Rapid Championship will see participation from 230 players.
Among the notable participants is Norwegian world champion Magnus Carlsen, who previously secured the gold medal at the World Blitz Championship held in New York. Al Mudahka emphasized that Carlsen’s presence significantly enhances the tournament’s competitive and technical depth.
Several leading chess stars are set to compete, including Gukesh Dommaraju, the Indian World Rapid Champion, and reigning 2024 World Blitz Champion Ian Nepomniachtchi. Other prominent names include Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Wesley So, and Levon Aronian, alongside rising talents like Vincent Keymer and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
Doha’s Growing Reputation in Chess
Al Mudahka noted that Doha has become the only city to host the World Rapid and Blitz Championships twice, following its inaugural event in 2016. He described this as a significant achievement that underscores Qatar’s expanding role in the global chess community, especially with the tournament’s return after nine years.
He expressed gratitude for the support received from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund (Daam), and various partners and sponsors. Al Mudahka highlighted a shared goal of delivering an exceptional event that promotes chess development in Qatar and boosts its international profile.
The Organizing Committee has also signed multiple sponsorship agreements, with representatives from Daam and Qatar University present at the signing. In addition to seasoned competitors, the tournament will showcase emerging talents, including Ivan Zemlyanskii, a 15-year-old grandmaster, and Yagız Kaan Erdogmus, a 14-year-old prodigy from Turkey.
On the women’s side, Ju Wenjun, a five-time Women’s World Champion from China, has officially confirmed her participation. The women’s competition will include 130 players, featuring top-ranked competitors like Tan Zhongyi, Aleksandra Goryachkina, and Anna Muzychuk, who won both the Rapid and Blitz titles in Doha in 2016.
Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Federation and Tournament Director, informed Qatar News Agency that the organizing committee is finalizing details ahead of the event. He noted strong ticket demand and anticipated extensive audience engagement, with broadcasts planned across various international chess platforms.
Al Tamimi highlighted the tournament as a valuable opportunity for young players to witness elite chess athletes in action, inspiring the next generation to engage with the game and develop their skills.
Eng. Hamoud Al Hajri, Director of Sports Facilities at Qatar University, confirmed that the Sports and Events Complex is fully prepared to host the championships. He emphasized the efforts being made to deliver an outstanding edition, asserting that hosting the competition on campus will positively impact students and foster a sustainable sporting legacy.
Doha previously hosted the championships in 2016, when Vasyl Ivanchuk won the World Rapid title and Sergey Karjakin claimed the World Blitz crown. The upcoming tournament boasts a total prize fund exceeding EUR 1 million, which will be distributed across both the open and women’s competitions.
