Piyush Mishra Reflects on Infidelity and Alcoholism in Candid Interview
Actor and musician Piyush Mishra recently opened up about the challenging aspects of his life, including infidelity in his marriage and a long-standing struggle with alcoholism. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, he discussed the emotional turmoil surrounding his confession to his wife, Priya Narayanan, as well as the relief he found in honesty.
Reflecting on his past, Mishra described the internal conflict he faced before revealing his unfaithfulness. “If you have confessed to your wife, it is a big deal,” he noted. “I had a storm brewing inside me before I told my wife everything, and when I told her everything, it calmed down.” He recounted his wife’s supportive response, emphasizing the importance of transparency in their relationship: “Koi baat nahi. Tumne kuch galtiyan ki, kuch maine (it’s okay, you made some mistakes, and I did some).” He highlighted her understanding, stating, “My heart is clean now after coming out with the truth, and it’s time to move on and live our lives.”
Mishra further explained that rather than experiencing pain, the confession brought him a sense of relief. “Well, it was easy for me,” he shared. “People came to me and said, ‘It must have been tough.’ But it wasn’t the case for me. I was at peace after telling her the truth. I felt liberated after telling her the truth.”
Struggles with Alcoholism
The actor also revisited his battle with alcoholism, which he referred to as the biggest regret of his life. He reflected on how this struggle impacted his career and creativity, stating, “Had I not drowned my life in alcohol and had more control over it in the initial stage itself, I would have achieved bigger things in my life.” He emphasized the detrimental effects of alcohol on artistic expression, saying, “Intoxication kills creativity.”
Mishra expressed remorse over not addressing his addiction sooner: “If I had quit it initially, things would have been different for me.” His candid remarks shed light on the personal challenges he has faced while navigating his career, which has included acclaimed performances in films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Maqbool, and Tamasha.
Married to Priya Narayanan since 1995, Mishra acknowledged that despite his past infidelities, she chose to support him throughout their marriage.
Autobiography and Public Response
Mishra also discussed his recent autobiography, Tumhari Auqaat Kya Hai, which was released in English translation in November. The book explores deeply personal experiences, including his love affairs, struggles with alcohol, and childhood trauma. “I didn’t want to hide anything about my life,” he stated. “But I tried to write it without making it obscene.” He revealed that while he changed the names of the women he wrote about, the instances remain unchanged.
He was pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback received after the book’s release, especially from those he wrote about. “In fact, all the women called me after reading the book to appreciate the way I dealt with it,” he said, noting that he had anticipated criticism but instead received support.
Mishra’s career began with his film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se… in 1998. Since then, he has continued to earn critical acclaim for his performances. Currently, he is touring with his music and has plans to write a novel titled Sirfira.
Through his revelations, Piyush Mishra has shown that honesty can be a powerful tool for healing and personal growth, both for himself and those around him.
