Kiwi Designer Transforms Derelict Shed into Enchanted Retreat
New Zealand landscape designer Anthony Paul has turned a once derelict shed into an enchanting garden folly in the heart of the Surrey Hills, a site known for its natural beauty and historical significance. The transformation of the Summer House, located near the historical Oke River, showcases not only architectural creativity but also a deep appreciation for the natural surroundings.
The Summer House is best experienced in the early morning, just as the sun begins to rise. As light filters through ancient oaks, the serene atmosphere is accompanied by the soothing sounds of birdsong and the gentle flow of water from the river below. This tranquil setting offers a life-affirming experience for artists and nature-lovers alike.
When Anthony and his late wife, Hannah Peschar, acquired the property 40 years ago, it was far from the idyllic retreat it has become. The structure was a neglected shed, hidden within a bramble-filled garden. “The unloved building I inherited was completely abandoned,” Anthony recalls. “Bats lived in the roof and mice had moved in under the floor.”
Under Anthony’s careful direction, the shed evolved into a rustic retreat that harmonizes with its woodland environment. He aimed to retain the building’s original footprint while enhancing its aesthetics to blend seamlessly into the landscape.
“I began by clearing thickets of brambles and dead trees to create an uninterrupted view of the Oke River,” he explains. “It took forever to cut away the ivy that had engulfed the building to see exactly what it looked like. To my surprise, there was this delightful hermit’s hut.”
Unlike the elaborate follies of the 18th century, which often mimic grand historical structures, the Summer House maintains a humble charm. The restoration process was a labour of love, focusing on preserving the integrity of the original building while introducing elements that enhance its rustic appeal.
Timber from storm-felled trees was utilized in the construction, allowing Anthony to create a unique outdoor dining space on two sides of the building. The deck offers stunning views of the surrounding woodland, showcasing a palette of rich greens from native oak, ash, and hornbeam trees.
The Summer House is not just a personal retreat for Anthony; it has become a source of inspiration for visiting artists and photographers. Over the years, he has expanded the surrounding four hectares into a celebrated natural landscape, which now includes the internationally recognized Hannah Peschar Sculpture garden.
Reflecting on his journey, Anthony reveals, “Growing up in New Zealand, I was hugely influenced by the natural world. School holidays spent camping in the native bush were the best education a young boy could have.” His work has attracted a host of notable clients, including musicians and artists, but his true passion lies in nurturing his own garden at Black & White Cottage and the Summer House.
In a recent Q&A, Anthony shared insights about the renovation process. The best aspect, he noted, was the opportunity to use materials from nature itself. His only regret was not planning for an extension to accommodate additional guests.
Despite the challenges, such as relocating the bats that had made the structure their home, Anthony remains committed to preserving the ecological integrity of the site. “I used as many natural, organic materials as possible to create harmony with the surrounding woodland,” he stated.
The Summer House stands as a testament to Anthony’s vision and dedication to sustainability. “I wanted to create somewhere to escape, a quiet sanctuary to be inspired by nature,” he concludes. The enchanting folly not only enriches the landscape but also serves as a reminder of the beauty that can emerge from a forgotten past.
