Qatar Exits U-23 Asian Cup After Third Consecutive Loss
Qatar’s journey in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup 2026 concluded with a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Japan in their final Group B match held in Doha on March 15, 2024. This loss marked Qatar’s third consecutive defeat in the tournament, eliminating them from contention for the knockout stages.
Under the guidance of head coach Ilidio Vale, Qatar sought a consolation win after earlier defeats to the United Arab Emirates and Syria. Despite their hopes, they faced a dominant Japanese side that showcased their skill and strategy throughout the match.
Japan Secures Top Spot in Group B
Japan opened the scoring with a goal from Shusuke Furuya in the first half, establishing control over the game. Ryunosuke Sato added another goal in the second half, solidifying Japan’s perfect record in the group stage. With this victory, Japan finished at the top of Group B and will advance to face Jordan in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates also advanced from Group B despite a 1-1 draw against Syria. Both teams ended the group stage with four points, but the UAE progressed due to a superior goal difference. They will face Vietnam in the next round, aiming to continue their tournament journey.
The results of the matches have set the stage for a competitive quarter-final round, with several teams showcasing their potential as they vie for the championship title.
