Showbiz Queenstown Dominates Theatre Awards with Six Wins

Showbiz Queenstown emerged as a standout at the recent theatre awards, winning a total of six accolades, including the coveted award for best musical for its production of Into the Woods. The awards ceremony took place on March 16, 2024, at the Wingatui Racecourse, celebrating the exceptional contributions of performers and production teams in the region over the past year.

Celebrating Theatre Excellence

The event was a gathering of the region’s most talented individuals, highlighting their dedication and creativity. In addition to Showbiz Queenstown’s triumph, Repertory Invercargill received the award for best play with its production of Mum’s the Word 2 — Teenagers. Central Southland College was recognized for its outstanding youth production of Sweeney Todd — The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The awards also acknowledged individual achievements in direction and performance. Marty Newell from Showbiz Queenstown took home the award for best director, further solidifying the company’s reputation for excellence. The organization also won accolades for best set, best vocal direction, and best overall musical for the upcoming year.

Highlighting Top Performers

Among the 24 awards presented, Musical Theatre Dunedin earned four awards for its production of Chess, while Taieri Musical secured three awards for its rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar. The awards for best leading performers included Darren Ludlow, who was recognized for his role as Nanny Fanny in Throbbin Wood, and Sarah McCarthy, who won for her portrayal of Barbara in Mum’s the Word 2 — Teenagers.

In the musical category, James Adams was honored as the best leading male performer for his role as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, while Megan Kolppanen received the award for best leading female performer for her portrayal of Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! from East Otago Musical Theatre.

The awards not only recognize artistic talent but also foster a sense of community among theatre enthusiasts. As the night concluded, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and appreciation for the hard work and creativity that characterize the region’s theatrical landscape.
