Wellington Phoenix Women Surge to Unprecedented Success in A-League
The Wellington Phoenix Women are currently making waves in the A-League Women, firmly establishing themselves in second place on the table after an impressive start to the season. Having scored a league-high 26 goals and allowed only 10, the Phoenix achieved a historic 5-1 away victory against the Newcastle Jets, marking their largest away win to date. The match, which was abandoned after 88 minutes due to threatening weather, showcased the team’s dominant performance, with the Phoenix leading 4-0 by the 22nd minute.
This season has been a remarkable turnaround for the Phoenix, who previously struggled in their first two seasons, finishing last and winning only five of 32 matches. Under the leadership of coach Bev Priestman, the team has transformed, drawing on a mix of local talent and international recruits. Priestman, who previously coached Canada to Olympic gold, has instilled a new mindset and approach in the team, focusing on building consistency and leveraging the unique attributes of Kiwi players.
Historic Achievements and Emerging Talent
A standout performer this season is Pia Vlok, who made headlines by scoring the first hat-trick in Phoenix history during the victory over Newcastle. At just 17 years, four months, and 28 days old, Vlok became the second-youngest player to achieve this feat in the A-League, further underscoring the rising talent within the squad. Earlier in December, the Phoenix also recorded a stunning 7-0 win against Sydney FC, setting a new benchmark for the club.
Captain MacKenzie Barry, a key figure since the team’s inception in 2021, reflected on the team’s journey. “It was a pretty rough start, to be honest. Most of us had never played professionally,” Barry said, noting the significant development in both skill and confidence within the squad. The Phoenix’s training facilities at the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS) in Upper Hutt have played a pivotal role in this progress, offering state-of-the-art resources comparable to those of Melbourne City.
With an increasingly clear pathway for female players, the Phoenix Academy has also begun to bear fruit. Last September, the women’s reserves reached the final of the Kate Sheppard Cup for the first time, finishing as runners-up to Auckland United. The academy has produced many players for the U19 Football Ferns, who recently triumphed in the OFC championships in Tahiti.
Strengthening the Squad and Future Aspirations
The Phoenix’s recruitment strategy has evolved, with Priestman’s experience helping to attract quality talent. This season has seen the arrival of players such as Brooke Nunn, Tessel Middag, and Sabitra Bhandari. However, the team has faced challenges due to injuries, requiring adjustments to their attacking lineup. Despite setbacks, new signings like Americans Makala Woods and Mackenzie Anthony have stepped up to maintain the team’s competitive edge.
The A-League Women is experiencing a surge in popularity, particularly following the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by New Zealand. According to New Zealand Football, the number of participants in football and futsal increased by 35 percent since 2022. The league’s recent collective bargaining agreement has also paved the way for enhanced spending limits and a full home-and-away women’s season, contributing to record attendance and viewership.
As the Phoenix Women continue to build momentum, they aim to secure a playoff spot for the first time. With only one point separating them from the eighth-placed Perth Glory FC, the competition remains fierce. Barry emphasized the importance of staying focused, stating, “The table is tight, we’re playing well, but we can’t afford to become complacent.”
The Phoenix Women are now not only competing but thriving, with their journey reflecting the growing strength and visibility of women’s football in New Zealand. As they push towards the next stages of the season, their success serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and coaching staff, fostering a bright future for the club and its supporters.
