Young Farmers Compete for $90,000 in Prizes at Gore A&P Show

The annual Gore A&P Show is set to feature a highlight event this weekend, as the top eight young farmers from the southern region of New Zealand compete for a coveted place in the grand final and a share of over $90,000 in prizes. This competition, now in its 58th year, showcases the skills and innovation present in New Zealand’s food and fibre sector.

Taking place at the Gore Showgrounds, the competition will see finalists engaging in fast-paced, head-to-head challenges starting at 8 a.m.. The participants include notable names such as Lachlan Dudin from Thornbury Young Farmers, Hayden Smith and Thomas Slee from Nightcaps Young Farmers, Sharon Schuurmans from Thornbury Young Farmers, Henry Smith from Clinton Young Farmers, Max McCallum from Balfour Young Farmers, Harry McCallum from Te Anau Young Farmers, and Ann-Kristin Loferski from West Otago Young Farmers.

The contest will culminate in an engaging buzzer quiz during the awards dinner at Gore Town & Country. This event not only highlights the prowess of the young farmers but also sets the stage for future agricultural stars, with additional competitions such as AgriKidsNZ and the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year. Participants in all age categories will have the opportunity to advance to the grand final scheduled for July.

In addition to the competitions, the Gore A&P Show will feature a diverse array of livestock exhibits, including cattle, horses, pigs, goats, and various bird species. A significant attraction will be the Ayrshire South Island Championships, which will be part of the dairy section, showcasing some of the best in New Zealand’s livestock.

The Hokonui Pavilion will also be a focal point, displaying a variety of baking, preserves, crafts, garden flowers, and vegetables, as well as a children’s section dedicated to engaging activities. Following a successful year, XO Kids will return with exciting new activities alongside their traditional program.

The Gore A&P Show will not only provide a platform for agricultural excellence but will also entertain visitors with live music from local artists, including Steve Hamlin and Kayla Wilcox, along with performances from the Gore Musical Theatre. Other attractions include a grand parade at 2:15 p.m., a dog race at 2:45 p.m.—encouraging pet owners to bring their dogs—and thrilling mountain bike stunts by Levi Goodall.

Expect plenty of excitement with events like the Big Dig, woodchopping contests, and even a mullet competition scheduled for 2 p.m.. Families can also enjoy the Pet Corner, featuring pony rides with a gold coin donation supporting Riding for the Disabled.

The Gore A&P Show promises to be an engaging and vibrant celebration of agriculture, showcasing the talents of young farmers while offering entertainment and community spirit for all attendees.
