Henderson is reading The Princess Bride by William Goldman to her children. Having enjoyed the film adaptation, she finds the book equally captivating, if not superior. The story’s playful and surreal qualities resonate with her, particularly the unique narrative style that features a fictional author. Henderson describes Goldman’s writing as conversational, inviting readers to feel as though they are sharing a moment with him. “It’s the kind of book that wants voices and interruptions,” she notes, highlighting its engaging nature that prompts requests for “one more chapter.”

In addition to this classic, she is delving into 1985 by Dominic Hoey, a novel set in Grey Lynn. Henderson appreciates the specificity of the setting, which creates a strangely comforting familiarity. She finds Hoey’s writing both unexpected and humorous, especially during darker themes. His keen perception of truth and ability to craft authentic characters leave a lasting impression on her. “He sneaks up on you,” she remarks, emphasizing how readers often care more than they initially anticipated.

Henderson is also revisiting AMMA by Saraid de Silva through its audiobook format. After reading it once, she felt compelled to experience it again, this time through audio. “Hearing it is different – I love how it lands out loud,” she explains. The rich emotional depth and intricate storytelling regarding family and legacy resonate with her, and she admires de Silva’s ability to create nuanced characters, a skill likely honed through her acting background. Henderson expresses hope that de Silva might adapt the novel for the stage with Silo Theatre in the future, a prospect she would greatly welcome.
