Anchorage Park School’s Kapa Haka Group Wins Cultural Award
A group of young performers from **Anchorage Park School** in Pakuranga has achieved notable recognition at the **Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival**. The school’s **Kapa Haka group** was awarded the **Nani Nellie Kirkwood Taonga Tuku Iho** for best overall performance during the festival, which took place on **March 15, 2024**, at **Ruapotaka Marae** in Glen Innes.
The festival, which celebrates cultural diversity and unity, attracted over **700 students** from **16 schools** in the region. This year’s theme, **‘Rāhiri mai te ao’** or **‘Welcoming the World’**, set the stage for an inspiring display of talent and cultural expression. **Tracy Leader**, the principal of Anchorage Park School, expressed pride in the achievements of her students.
“It was a thrilling day showcasing incredible talent from across **Tāmaki Makaurau** and beyond,” Leader stated. The Anchorage Park Kapa Haka team, comprised of **21 students**, performed with remarkable energy and confidence, competing against larger groups for the prestigious award. Leader noted that this was their first participation in the festival, making their achievement even more significant.
The dedication and commitment demonstrated by the students were highlighted by Leader, who praised their consistent practice during lunchtime throughout the year. “This is an amazing achievement and we couldn’t be prouder of our tamariki,” she added.
The award was presented by representatives from **Ruapotaka Marae**, who visited the school to honor the group. The trophy, selected by the **kaumatua** of Ruapotaka Marae, will remain with Anchorage Park School until the next festival, further solidifying the school’s cultural pride.
All performance items were original compositions by the school’s **Kapa Haka kaiako**, **Whaea Pare**, and reflected the local community’s essence. The school’s whakatauki, **‘kia pono, kia maia, kia whakakotahi’**, translates to **‘let us be honest, let us be brave, so we can all unite’**, embodying the values of integrity, courage, and unity that the school promotes.
As the Anchorage Park School Kapa Haka group continues to inspire through their cultural performances, their victory at the **Te Kōtuku Cultural Festival** stands as a testament to their hard work and passion for celebrating their heritage.
