Auckland FC Faces Injury Crisis Without Fitness Coach

Auckland FC is grappling with a significant injury crisis as they approach the end of the A-League season without a fitness coach. The club’s decision to part ways with Elias Boukarim, who served as the inaugural head of performance, remains unexplained. Boukarim, an Australian known for his rigorous approach to fitness and injury prevention, left the team last month. The club stated he returned to Sydney to be with family.

Coach Steve Corica has not provided further insight into Boukarim’s departure, stating he “would prefer not to” discuss the matter. Corica acknowledged the loss of Boukarim’s experience, emphasizing, “What he did for the club was excellent, and we want to thank him for that.”

Despite the ongoing injury toll, which has left six players unavailable for their upcoming match against Perth Glory on March 31, 2024, Corica does not believe this is linked to the absence of a head of performance. Captain Hiroki Sakai is sidelined for up to a month due to recurring hamstring issues. He sustained this injury during a recent match against Melbourne City.

Injuries have plagued the squad further, with Nando Pijnaker spraining his ankle during training ahead of the derby against the Wellington Phoenix. He is expected to miss a couple of weeks, along with Marlee François, who is dealing with bone bruising on his foot. Goalkeeper Oli Sail suffered a season-ending knee injury during the last encounter with Perth Glory in January, while fellow keeper Joe Knowles is also currently injured.

Midfielder Louis Verstrate is recovering from a hamstring injury and is anticipated to return to training soon, although he remains a doubt for the match against Perth Glory.

Corica stated that the club’s strength and conditioning program has not seen significant changes since Boukarim’s departure. “Theo [Van der Mei] has been managing that role since Elias left, but he was learning from Elias, so he’s not quite there yet,” Corica explained. He acknowledged Van der Mei’s efforts but emphasized the need to fill the position.

The coach indicated that they may “possibly” appoint a new fitness coach by the end of the season, but if the right candidate is not found, they will continue with the current setup and seek someone for the next season.

Auckland FC faces a challenging period ahead as they navigate injuries and the absence of a key performance figure within the club. Fans will be watching closely to see how the team adapts in the coming weeks.
