Local Government VP Calls for Greater Participation in Upcoming Elections

Local Government Vice President Campbell Barry has expressed concern over the low number of candidates for the upcoming council elections in October 2023. His remarks follow a series of unopposed elections, which have seen several council positions filled without competition across the country. This trend includes three of the sixteen councillors in Christchurch, two of the twenty councillors in Auckland, and five of the thirteen councillors in Lower Hutt.
Barry, who is also the outgoing mayor of Lower Hutt, described the situation as “less-than-ideal.” He pointed to a challenging environment that may deter potential candidates from stepping forward. The lack of competition could lead to a diminished democratic process, which he believes is vital for local governance.
Encouraging Engagement in Local Elections
According to Barry, a high-profile mayoral race could serve as a catalyst for increased public interest in local elections. He emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating that a vibrant democratic process requires active participation from residents. Barry encourages individuals to consider standing for election, asserting that diverse representation is crucial for addressing local issues effectively.
The upcoming elections are critical, as they provide an opportunity for citizens to influence decision-making at the local level. Barry’s comments reflect a growing concern about civic engagement in New Zealand, where several council positions have seen uncontested elections.
Despite the setbacks, Barry remains optimistic that heightened awareness and excitement around the mayoral race may inspire a broader array of candidates to emerge. He urged potential candidates to not shy away from the electoral process, as their contributions are essential for the communities they represent.
As the October elections approach, the focus will be on how local government can engage citizens effectively and encourage a more competitive electoral landscape. Barry’s call to action highlights the need for communities to come together and ensure that local elections reflect the diverse voices of their populations.
