New Zealand Open Generates $12.36 Million Economic Boost

The recent New Zealand Open at Millbrook Resort showcased not only thrilling golf but also significant economic contributions to the region. Australian golfer Ryan Peake clinched victory with a dramatic 90-centimeter putt on the 18th hole, marking a pivotal moment in the tournament’s history. His win not only earned him the championship title but also a coveted spot in the 2025 Open Championship, a first for this tournament.
The event, which took place in early March, saw a remarkable surge in participation and viewership. Organisers reported a 48% increase in total attendees compared to previous years, attracting over seven million viewers from more than 90 countries. This year’s tournament has been hailed as a resounding success, with economic research conducted by global market research firm YouGov indicating an impressive $12.36 million economic impact for New Zealand as a whole, and $23.34 million specifically for the Queenstown area.
In addition to the financial benefits, the tournament contributed to local tourism, generating 45,000 bed nights in Queenstown. John Hart, chairman of the New Zealand Open, expressed satisfaction with the findings, stating in an interview with the Herald that the results had exceeded their expectations.
The New Zealand Open has established itself as a significant event on the international golf calendar, drawing attention from both local and global audiences. The combination of compelling narratives, such as Peake’s redemption story, and tangible economic gains underscores the tournament’s growing importance in the sports world.
Looking ahead, the 2025 New Zealand Open promises to build on this momentum, further enhancing the region’s profile as a premier golf destination. With ongoing support and strategic planning, the tournament is poised to attract even more players and spectators in the future, solidifying its place in the global golf landscape.
