Mel Migrino Champions Gender Inclusivity and Cybersecurity in the Philippines

The rise of technology and cybersecurity has created new opportunities for leaders to advocate for social change. Mel Migrino, a prominent figure in the fields of IT and cybersecurity, is leveraging her success to champion gender inclusivity and promote cybersecurity practices in the Philippines. Her commitment to these causes is driven by a desire to support those who face digital exclusion and to empower women leaders in the technology sector.
In an enlightening interview for the First Person podcast, Migrino emphasized that her primary focus is on inclusivity. “The first thing people should know about me is that I champion gender inclusion,” she stated, highlighting her dedication to this vital issue. Migrino’s multifaceted career has positioned her as a senior executive with a wealth of experience, and she now aims to use her influence for the greater good.
Advocacy Through Experience
Migrino’s journey began with a focus on software development, which she chose as a means of financial stability. A pivotal moment came when a friend introduced her to the field of information security, leading her to combine her technical skills with her business acumen to become a leader in the industry. She attributes much of her success to her mentor, whom she describes as a “dragon lady” who recognized her potential and supported her growth.
Throughout her career, Migrino has emphasized the importance of continuous learning. She explained that her decisions to pivot from one role to another stem from a desire to remain engaged and knowledgeable. Now, she feels a profound sense of gratitude for her achievements, motivating her to act as an advocate for those who may not have the same opportunities.
Leading Change with WISAP
As the leader of the Women and Security Alliance Philippines (WISAP), Migrino is at the forefront of initiatives aimed at fostering gender inclusivity in cybersecurity. “Our goal is to develop digital risk leaders,” she explained. WISAP is committed to promoting equity, not merely elevating female leaders above their male counterparts. The organization comprises approximately 35 to 40 percent male members who actively support inclusion and diversity efforts.
Since its inception, WISAP has made significant strides in building partnerships with organizations across the ASEAN region. Migrino noted, “The community service we have shown for the past three years starts to have its own ripple effect. We are very grateful about it.” Her passion for advocacy extends beyond gender inclusivity; she is also focused on improving cybersecurity awareness among the general population in the Philippines.
Migrino’s experience as a cybersecurity leader spans over a decade. She leads a tech company that is actively engaged in fighting against scams and fraud. “I want to see greater advocacy against scams and fraud so that more Filipinos can be digitally enabled and confident in their online transactions,” she stated. Education and awareness are key components of her mission.
The urgency of this work is underscored by the alarming connection between cybercrime and more serious issues, such as human trafficking. Migrino stressed, “We focus on different facets of scams and how they can be an entry point to more serious issues.” For less privileged individuals, the risks are particularly severe, making the mission all the more critical.
Migrino’s advocacy work is deeply personal. “It’s not because I want to be known as the leader of a community,” she emphasized. Her Christian faith drives her passion for service. “I want to serve my community,” she concluded, reinforcing her commitment to making a difference.
In a world increasingly reliant on technology, Migrino’s efforts to promote gender inclusivity and advance cybersecurity practices are essential. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities and beyond.
