Banksy Exhibition Set to Captivate Christchurch This Summer

The renowned street artist Banksy will make his debut in Christchurch with a summer exhibition titled The Art of Banksy. This showcase will take place at the Te Pae Convention Centre, opening on December 17, 2023, and running until January 27, 2024, excluding public holidays. The exhibition has previously attracted over 1.5 million visitors across 20 cities worldwide, highlighting its significant global appeal.
Featuring a diverse array of works, the exhibition will include prints, canvases, and unique pieces that delve into Banksy’s creative process. Art enthusiasts can expect to see seminal pieces that elevated Banksy to international fame, including the iconic Girl with Balloon, which will be displayed in four distinct color variations, including a rare Gold Edition. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to view the original Flower Thrower and gain insight into its origins through a video interview with Banksy’s former girlfriend, Leonie Laws.
Boersma, the exhibition’s organizer, expressed enthusiasm about bringing this extensive collection to Christchurch, emphasizing its growth from 70 works displayed in Auckland in 2018 to over 150 authenticated pieces this time around. “We’re very excited to bring this larger-than-ever collection to Christchurch,” Boersma stated. “For the last nine years, we have been working with collectors to expand the collection, ensuring that all displayed works are genuine—no replicas.”
The general manager of Te Pae, Ross Steele, described the exhibition as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for art lovers. “This is the chance for art lovers to experience something incredibly unique this summer—whether you are a long-time Banksy fan or interested in the story behind some of the fascinating works,” he said. Steele added that this exhibition exemplifies the venue’s versatility and its commitment to providing local residents with access to world-class events.
As the opening date approaches, anticipation is building for what promises to be a memorable cultural event, offering a rare glimpse into the enigmatic world of one of contemporary art’s most provocative figures.
