Sonic Racing and Pac-Man Collaborate for Exciting Game Features
The upcoming release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to thrill gamers as it incorporates a unique collaboration with the beloved Pac-Man series. This partnership celebrates Pac-Man’s 45th anniversary and promises to deliver exciting new content for fans of both franchises. At Gamescom 2025, producers from both games shared insights about this innovative collaboration and what players can expect.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will feature Pac-Man as a playable character, along with a track inspired by the iconic game as part of its downloadable content (DLC). In return, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac, a full 3D remake of the classic platformer from the PlayStation 2 and GameCube eras, will offer a DLC pack themed around Sonic, including the famous Green Hill Zone as a playable stage.
At the heart of the collaboration is the innovative Travel Ring system, which allows players to engage with different worlds during races. Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, expressed his enthusiasm for this feature, stating, “What distinguishes us from other racing games are the Travel Rings. When you come to the second lap, you’ll pass through a Travel Ring that takes you to a completely different world.” This element is designed to enhance replayability by introducing new experiences each time players race.
The partnership stemmed from an initiative by Sega, as revealed by Yuji Yoshii, producer on Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac. He noted, “They said it would be wonderful to have Pac-Man in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. But we also thought that a two-way collaboration would be great.” Both teams are excited about the potential to engage players with characters from both franchises in ways that have not been seen before.
In addition to the collaborative elements, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will introduce a new gadget system. Iizuka acknowledged concerns regarding potential balance issues with certain powerful gadgets, particularly the monster truck item that gained attention during the open network test. He stated, “We see the gadget system as an innovation for racing games… but as we are also planning to update the gadget system, we have to take care and ensure it remains a system that everyone can enjoy.”
While details about future updates remain under wraps, Iizuka hinted at the possibility of new gadgets being added to maintain balance and variety in gameplay. “If you’re really good at drifting, for example, you can use gadgets to make drifting better,” he explained. This flexibility aims to cater to various play styles and enhance the overall racing experience.
The conversation also touched on personal favorites from each franchise. Iizuka shared his appreciation for the early side-scrolling games in the Pac-Man series. In turn, Yoshii expressed his fondness for Sonic Generations, highlighting its dual gameplay experience. Their mutual respect for each other’s work reflects the camaraderie and passion driving this collaboration.
As Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds prepares for its launch, it stands not only as a celebration of racing but also as a testament to the enduring appeal of both the Sonic and Pac-Man franchises. With the added excitement of cross-platform play and fresh content, fans can look forward to an engaging gaming experience that honors the legacy of two iconic characters.
