Teen Star Owen Cooper Makes History at Emmy Awards 2023
The 2023 Emmy Awards delivered unexpected wins and historic moments, notably for Owen Cooper, a 15-year-old star of the Netflix series “Adolescence.” Cooper made history by becoming the youngest recipient of the best supporting actor award in a limited series category. His victory was part of a night that highlighted both established and emerging talent in the television industry.
In a surprising twist, HBO’s “The Pitt” claimed the award for best drama series, overshadowing the frontrunner, “Severance.” Noah Wyle received his first Emmy award for best drama actor, having been nominated five times previously for his role in “ER.” Wyle expressed his gratitude during his acceptance speech, particularly acknowledging healthcare workers. “To anyone going on shift or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job,” he stated.
Celebrating New Talent and Unforgettable Moments
The event also saw Seth Rogen, co-creator and star of “The Studio,” take home his first Emmy for best comedy actor. Rogen, who also won awards for directing and writing, shared his delight, saying, “I’m legitimately embarrassed by how happy this makes me.”
In a significant turn for the talk show genre, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” received the best talk series award for the first time in its decade-long history. This achievement comes amid CBS’s controversial decision to cancel the show for financial reasons. During the ceremony, Colbert humorously appealed to the audience, asking, “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?”
Cooper’s triumph in the limited series category, where “Adolescence” was awarded best limited series, emphasized the show’s impact. “If you listen and you focus and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything,” Cooper remarked, reflecting on his journey over the past few years.
In another standout moment, Jeff Hiller surprised attendees by winning best supporting comedy actor for “Somebody Somewhere.” Hiller humorously thanked HBO executives for showcasing “sweaty, middle-aged people” alongside the younger stars of “Euphoria.” The comedy series “Hacks” also had a strong presence, with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder winning awards for best actress and supporting actress in a comedy series, respectively. Smart’s win marked her fourth Emmy for the role, while Einbinder celebrated her first victory after three prior nominations.
Emmy Awards 2023 Overview
The competition this year was particularly fierce, with both HBO and Netflix leading the pack, each securing 30 Emmy Awards. Apple TV+ followed with 22 awards. The winners were selected by approximately 26,000 members of the Television Academy, which includes performers, directors, and producers.
First-time host Nate Bargatze brought a light-hearted approach to the ceremony, incentivizing winners to keep their speeches brief by pledging a $100,000 donation to charity. Bargatze humorously noted that his fund ended up in deficit due to lengthy remarks but announced that he and CBS would contribute $350,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
Overall, the 2023 Emmy Awards showcased a blend of established stars and new faces, celebrating the evolving landscape of television and its impact on audiences around the world.
