Shane Jones Officially Appointed Deputy Leader of New Zealand First
Shane Jones has officially been appointed as the Deputy Leader of New Zealand First, a decision made by his caucus colleagues. Although the party did not have a formal deputy leader this term, Jones had often been regarded as the de facto deputy due to his senior role within the party. The announcement, which came as a surprise on Wednesday, revealed that the caucus unanimously elected Jones to this position.
The party expressed confidence in Jones, stating he has demonstrated “relentless hard work,” loyalty, and an “unquestionable passion for our country.” Furthermore, New Zealand First highlighted that Jones’ new role would provide the party with “certainty, direction, and structure” as they prepare for the upcoming election campaign in 2024.
Political Background and Recent Developments
Jones currently serves as the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, as well as holding positions in Regional Development and Resources, with associate roles in Energy and Finance. His political career began in 2005 when he entered Parliament as a Labour list MP. He made an unsuccessful bid for the Labour Party leadership in 2013, after which he resigned to become the Pacific Economic Ambassador.
Jones re-entered politics in 2017 as a New Zealand First MP. He served until 2020, then returned to the political scene in 2023. His appointment comes shortly after New Zealand First’s annual convention held in Palmerston North, where party leader Winston Peters predicted a significant political victory in the next election.
At the convention, former Labour minister Stuart Nash declared his support for New Zealand First and expressed interest in running as a candidate. This endorsement, along with Jones’ new role, reflects a strategic move as the party aims to solidify its position ahead of the election.
Previous deputy leaders of New Zealand First include Tracey Martin, Ron Mark, and Fletcher Tabuteau. With Jones now officially holding the deputy title, the party aims to leverage his experience and dedication to enhance its campaign efforts as it looks toward the future.
