Former Player Mithun Manhas Set to Lead Indian Cricket Board
Mithun Manhas is positioned to become the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following the closure of nominations on September 24, 2023. The only nomination received was for Manhas, highlighting his unopposed status as he prepares to take on this influential role.
Despite a playing career that did not include an Indian cap, the former Delhi captain transitioned into cricket administration after his time as a first-class batsman. According to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, a panel is ready to endorse Manhas for the presidency.
Transition of Leadership
The upcoming elections, scheduled for September 28, 2023, will see Manhas succeed Roger Binny, a former World Cup-winner who resigned in August after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Binny’s tenure was marked by significant developments within the BCCI, making Manhas’s appointment pivotal for the future direction of Indian cricket.
The decision to nominate Manhas was made during a crucial meeting in New Delhi, attended by key figures from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and BCCI officials. Reports indicate that the meeting convened at the residence of Amit Shah, India’s Home Minister and father of Jay Shah, the head of the International Cricket Council.
Prior to this nomination, Manhas served as the director of the cricket association in Indian-administered Kashmir. His extensive involvement in cricket administration positions him well to navigate the complexities of leading the BCCI, an organization that has become the wealthiest cricket board globally, generating substantial revenue through sponsorship and television deals.
Future Prospects and Continuity
Alongside Manhas’s anticipated presidency, Devajit Saikia is expected to continue in his role as BCCI secretary, while Shukla will remain as vice-president. This continuity in leadership is seen as vital for maintaining stability within the organization as it strives to enhance its influence and operations in the cricketing landscape.
