SpaceX Acquires $17 Billion Spectrum Licenses from EchoStar
Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, has acquired spectrum licenses from EchoStar for a significant sum of $17 billion. This transaction, announced in a joint statement, aims to enhance the operations of SpaceX’s Starlink network. The acquisition will allow EchoStar’s Boost Mobile subscribers to utilize SpaceX’s direct-to-cell service without needing a dedicated terminal.
The first direct-to-cell satellites were launched by SpaceX in early 2024. Following this launch, customers of the Starlink “direct-to-cell” network can now send text messages and alerts, as well as access various applications, social networks, and messaging platforms, particularly in remote areas. This service is expected to bridge connectivity gaps in locations where traditional terrestrial networks are unavailable.
To support the delivery of its services, SpaceX has partnered with ten mobile network operators across regions including North and South America, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, and Ukraine. According to the company, more than 50 percent of the world’s land mass lacks coverage from existing terrestrial services.
As SpaceX continues to develop the next generation of its direct-to-cell constellation, the company emphasizes its commitment to collaborating with mobile network operators globally. The goal is to achieve widespread coverage for as many customers as possible, enhancing connectivity in underserved areas.
In financial markets, EchoStar’s stock saw a notable increase. In pre-market electronic trading on the New York Stock Exchange, shares rose by 22 percent to reach $82. This surge reflects investor confidence in the partnership and the potential growth opportunities it presents.
The acquisition of these spectrum licenses marks a significant step for SpaceX as it seeks to expand its reach and bolster the capabilities of the Starlink network. With the growing demand for reliable communication services, this deal positions both SpaceX and EchoStar to play crucial roles in the evolving landscape of global connectivity.
